We have just finished watching Horton Hears a Who and the final activity in this section was called the 48 Hour Film Festival. We had to make a movie trailer about a Dr Seuss book. We only had 2 days to make it! We worked in groups of 4 on an iPad using a new app called iMovie.
Our success criteria we made after watching our first attempts included:
- The movie had to give the viewer a taste of what the book was about
- It had to have a title / say written by Dr Seuss
- It should represent the book
- It should have clear, relevant, appropriate photos

We have just finished the first unit in AVAILLL called Meet the Robinsons. Today we are going to read the picture book that the movie is based on.
While we read the book, we are going to think about the key differences between the movie and the book and record our ideas on a venn diagram. Some people may choose to try an online venn diagram tool.
We have started a new class book called Jonty and Choc. Jonty and Choc is a NZ novel written by award-winning author Vince Ford. The story is told in easy to understand language and readers will relate to the relaxed lingo used by the author. Both main characters are hugely likeable and the problems that they face will be easily understood by readers, as all students face change at some time in their schooling. The boys are excited about starting Intermediate but also a little apprehensive about the unknown. Both boys pursue their own interests and activities at Intermediate and the story shows us that we can be individuals with our own interests and still remain friends. The friendship between the boys also crosses cultural barriers, as Choc is Maori and Jonty is a white South African. The boys have very different home lives and backgrounds and Jonty's mother doesn't approve of the friendship, but despite this, the friendship survives.
Now that we have finished the book 'Wonder' you can think some of the connections you can make with parts of the story. I would really like to hear your comments about this story. Use the ideas or activities to let me know.

In the next chapter, we met Mr Browne who is Auggie's English teacher. He talks to his class about precepts. We found out a precept is a rule about really important things - a reminder about how to live your life.

In the next few chapters, we read about Auggie's first real day of school. Before we read, we thought about some advice for him if he was going to start at Tinwald School. Here's what we thought:
In our book today, we read about Auggie visiting his new school for the first time. He thought that he was just going to meet the principal and have a look around but he ended up going on a tour with some of the students who will be in his room. As we listened to the story, we pretended that we were Auggie and made notes of things that we thought were interesting on the tour. Then we wrote a diary entry about Auggie's school tour.
